What if we took Nestlé’s to task on its own sustainability commitments? What would a truly sustainable Nestle look like? As a framework, we placed Nestlé’s commitments within the framework of climate justice—starting bottom-up with indigenous participation to meet local needs, and through the specific case study of coffee.
Our method involved studying open source information, including official Nestlé websites, interviews with company representatives, and websites of independent organizations supporting sustainability. We compared these sources to identify contradictions and question why knowledge about Nestlé is so fragmented.
The result is the podcast “1.5: How we did it.” It is a thought experiment tackling the climate crisis in reverse, thinking backwards from the future that is so necessary to reach. Set in an alternative, imagined future—one in which the global community succeeded in averting catastrophe—the podcast looks back earnestly on its alternative history and mimics popular contemporary archival strategies, preserving the steps taken for future generations.
